Chance is that you have been told that Windows 10 has wonderful graphics and you want to try it yourself. However, whenever you try the upgrade to Windows 10 you get a message that says “OK, notify me when Ready” similar to the picture below.
There are several post in the web telling you that this can be overcome in two simple steps:
- Go to “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” and delete everything there,
- Run Windows update from Control Panel; and, inmediately
- Open a Command Prompt windows and runs this command: “wuauclt.exe /updatenow”
I tell you what, this won’t work most of the time. But do not worry, it is still a simple solution to get you FREE version of Windows 10.
Just go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 , once you have read the info there just click in the appropriate version of your device, either 32 or 64 bit, and wait for the download. I am providing here a link to both versions:
Once it is downloaded you will have to follow the following steps to get your Windows 10 up and running.
1.- Run the MediaCreationTool executable.
2.- Once it gets everything ready it will ask you what to do, just mark Upgrade this PC Now and click Next.
3.- Now Windows 10 will be downloaded and once the download is verified it will create the media and then you will be able to install it as follow.
4.- Once the media is created and Windows cleaned the leftovers it will prepare the media for installation:
5.- Now It will check for any update required:
6.- Once updates are applied, if any, you will get the License Agreement that you have to accept if you really wants to install Windows 10 in your device. Make sure your actual version of Windows is genuine, otherwise you will find problems activating your new version of Windows 10. We encourage you to read very careful the License Agreement, it is your responsibility to know what you are accepting.
7.- Now that you have accepted to get tied to Microsoft’s license the fun start. Windows will check for updates, again, and it will ask you what to keep. You can keep your settings and apps, or just do a new Installaion of Windows 10. Be careful here if you have programs that you want to run after the install, make sure you chose first option; otherwise you will end with a PC like brand new.
8.- Now we are ready to install Windows 10. The version of Windows 10 you get will be the equivalent to the one you have installed. Click Install and go.
9.- Now you will see the progress of your installation.
10.- Once finished it will restart your PC.
11.- Once the install get through the end it will reboot your PC.
12.- Once the computer reboot you will see a black screen letting you know that Windows is being upgrade. Just wait it will not take that long.
13.- Once it is done you will get the Welcome Back Screen were your new profile will be set. Just click Next and let it be created.
14.- One more time here is to click on Express Setting and let Windows 10 re-enable your apps. You can chose Customize Settings if you would like to make any change to your settings, but assuming you are doing and upgrade and you are OK with your previous setup, it is recommended to use Express Settings.
15.- At the New Apps in Windows 10 just click Next again.
16.- Once this process finishes you will have your amazing Windows 10 installed on your device and be ready to use it. No activation required if your previous Windows was legally activated.
This procedure works on Windows 7, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. It works even if you are having some problem that were preventing you for do some updates on Windows 7. It also will update any Virtual Machine you could have on VirtualBox were you could have received a warning that Windows 10 is not compatible with your video card.
In the future post I will be explaining how to use a Media Tool in a different PC.
I hope you find this post useful. If any comment come across your mind it will be welcome if you let it below.
